Becoming Happier Through Brave New World

Start Date: Monday, May 18th

from 8:30 pm-9:30 pm EDT
Note: Due to the holiday, the second class will meet on Wednesday, May 27th instead of Monday, May 25th

In Brave New World, “everybody’s happy now”—but are they really? Travel to a future World State where people are genetically engineered and socially conditioned to be artificially happy all the time. Through close reading and discussion, we will investigate how prioritizing efficiency and comfort affects our experience of authentic happiness. We will also examine how Huxley’s insights connect to concepts in the science of happiness like flow and the permission to be human. Ultimately, our study of this book will challenge us to question what we know and how we know it and inspire us to strive for and demand better.
